Question 2

SMTP / Port 25 Policy at Infrawire

Accepted Answer

SMTP / Port 25 Policy at Infrawire

Overview

To protect the integrity of our network and the reputation of our IP ranges, Infrawire blocks outbound SMTP traffic on port 25 by default on all servers. This document explains why this restriction exists, what alternatives are available, and how customers can request an exception through our Paris (France) location.

Why Port 25 Is Blocked by Default

Port 25 is the standard port used for direct, unauthenticated mail relay between mail servers. Because it requires no prior authentication, it is the port most commonly abused by:

Spammers who compromise or rent servers to send bulk unsolicited email
Botnets that use hijacked servers to distribute phishing or malware campaigns
Open relays, misconfigured servers that let any third party send mail through them without authorization

When abuse occurs, the sending IP address (and often the entire surrounding IP range) gets added to public DNS-based blocklists (DNSBLs) such as Spamhaus or SORBS. Once an IP range is blocklisted, all customers hosted on that range — not just the abuser — suffer degraded email deliverability, since major mail providers (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, etc.) will reject or spam-flag mail originating from listed ranges.

Blocking outbound port 25 by default is a preventive measure that:

Stops automated spam scripts and compromised servers from sending unauthenticated bulk mail
Protects the reputation of Infrawire's shared IP sp

Understanding VPS Outages and Instability at Infrawire: A Troubleshooting Guide

If your VPS hosted with Infrawire has gone down, become unreachable, or started behaving erratically, it's easy to assume the worst. In reality, most outages and instability issues have a clear, identifiable cause — and many of them can be diagnosed (and sometimes fixed) directly from your Infrawire client area, without needing to open a support ticket at all.

This article walks through the most common reasons a VPS can go down or become unstable, in the order you should check them.

1. Check Whether Your VPS Is Actually Powered On

Before assuming there's a network or infrastructure problem, the first and simplest thing to verify is whether your VPS is actually running. Log into your Infrawire client area and check the power status of your instance. It's not uncommon for a VPS to have been stopped — whether due to a manual action, an automated maintenance event, or a billing-related suspension. If your instance shows as "off" or "stopped," simply restarting it from the control panel may resolve the issue immediately.

2. Bandwidth Overage and Network Blocking

Every Infrawire VPS plan comes with an allotted amount of monthly bandwidth. If your server has been transferring unusually high volumes of data — due to traffic spikes, a misconfigured backup job, an attack, or simply organic growth — you may have exceeded the bandwidth quota included in your offer.

When this happens, Infrawire
