# How to Connect to Your Linux VPS via SSH

# How to Connect to Your Linux VPS via SSH

In this guide, you will learn how to easily connect to your Infrawire Linux VPS using **SSH (Secure Shell)**.

Before starting, make sure you have your server credentials handy (IP address, username, and password or SSH key). You can find them in your delivery email or directly on your Infrawire dashboard.

## Step-by-Step Instructions

### Step 1: Get an Infrawire Linux VPS

If you don't have a server yet:

1. Head over to [**infrawire.net**](https://infrawire.net).
2. Navigate to the **VPS/VDS** section in the menu and click on **Linux**.
3. Scroll down to choose your preferred plan. All Infrawire Linux plans come with **full root access**.

### Step 2: Open a Terminal

On Linux and macOS, the SSH client is already built into your system, so you don't need to install anything.

1. Open the **Terminal** application (search for it in your applications menu, or use the shortcut `Ctrl + Alt + T` on most Linux distributions).
2. On Windows, you can use **PowerShell**, **Command Prompt**, or a client like **PuTTY** if you prefer a graphical interface.

### Step 3: Connect Using the SSH Command

1. In the terminal, type the following command, replacing `username` with your username (often `root`) and `SERVER_IP` with your VPS's IP address:

```bash
ssh username@SERVER_IP
```

2. Press **Enter**.

### Step 4: Accept the Server's Fingerprint

The first time you connect, a message like this may appear:

```
The authenticity of host 'SERVER_IP' can't be established.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?
```

This is completely normal for a new connection.

1. Type **yes** and press **Enter**.

### Step 5: Enter Your Password

1. The terminal will ask for the password associated with your username. Copy and paste the password provided in your dashboard or email (the password won't display on screen as you type, this is normal).
2. Press **Enter**.

You are now connected to your VPS! You should see your server's command prompt appear.

> 🔒 **Security Best Practice:** To keep your server completely secure, we highly recommend changing your default password immediately after your first login, and considering setting up **SSH key authentication** for added security.
